Fizz, Shoriful get three wickets each as Ctg beat Barishal

Star Online Report

Two left-arm pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam ran riot as they helped Gazi Group Chattogram beat an inexperienced Fortune Barishal by 10 runs in the seventh match of the ongoing Bangabandhu T20 Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today. With that win, Chattogram made it three wins out of three in the five-team competition.

After setting a 152-run target, Chattogram bowlers put up an excellent display as they restricted Barishal to 141 for eight. Both Mustafizur and Shoriful made lives difficult for the Barishal batsmen as the duo picked up three wickets each. Mustafizur finished with figures of three for 23 in his four overs while Shoriful conceded 27 for three in his four-over spell.

Coming in to chase a challenging total, Barishal's Mehidy Hasan Miraz departed early after a run-a-ball 13. Skipper Tamim Iqbal, who scored an unbeaten fifty in their previous game against Minister Group Rajshahi, was looking to be in good touch but the elegant left-hander could not score big after a good start. He departed in the 11th over after a run-a-ball 32.

After that, Barishal never looked to be in charge as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.

Earlier, Liton Das' 25-ball 35 gave a bright start to Chattogram while a cameo innings of 11-ball 27 from Shykat Ali -- replacement of Mominul Haque who was left out due to a thumb injury -- helped Chattogram pile up a decent total.

Shykat cameo helps Chattogram post a challenging total

Gazi Group Chattogram posted a challenging 151 for seven against Fortune Barishal on a pitch that had something to offer for the bowlers right from the start at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.

Potential of batsmen to score quick runs at the death is what would set Chattogram apart from others, predicted coach Mohammad Salahuddin before the start of the five-team tournament. And Shykat Ali -- the replacement of Mominul Haque who was left out due to a thumb injury -- did not fail in that regard. The right-hander played a cameo innings of 11-ball 27 that featured three big sixes off Abu Jayed in the penultimate over.

Chattogram's opening pair of Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar have been phenomenal so far in the tournament. But the latter could not amount to much today, departing after a six-ball 5 in the third over. Liton, who picked up his first half-century in their previous game, continued from where he had left off. The exquisite right-hander scored a 35-run knock off 25 deliveries, filled with some delightful strokes.

Shamsur Rahman and Mosaddek Hossain also contributed in the middle with their 26 and 28 respectively.

For Barishal, Jayed picked up two wickets while Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Sumon Khan, Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up a wicket each with Miraz remaining the most economical of all.

Barishal elect to bowl against Chattogram

Fortune Barishal won the toss and elected to bowl against Gazi Group Chattogram in the seventh match of the ongoing Bangabandhu T20 Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.

The Mohammad Mithun-led Chattogram have been the most impressive team in the five-team tournament so far. Chattogram won the two games they played against Beximco Dhaka and Gemcon Khulna comprehensively, bundling out oppositions below the 100-run mark on both occasions.

Led by Mustafizur Rahman, who picked up four wickets for five runs in his last outing against Khulna, Chattogram's bowlers seem in great rhythm.

As a consequence of their sublime bowling and the presence of two in-form openers in the form of Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das making the job even easier, the middle order is yet to be tested.

Chattogram will be missing Bangladesh Test skipper Mominul Haque as the left-hander picked up a thumb injury in the last game and could miss a major part of the tournament. Shykat Ali will be replacing injured Mominul while Sanjit Saha comes in for spinner Taijul Islam for today's match.

Tamim Iqbal-led Barishal will be going with an unchanged squad from their last game.
