BCB President’s Cup performances to open doors for future stars?
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin reiterated that the performances of the players in the ongoing BCB President's Cup are being looked into to find players capable of playing under certain circumstances and playing different roles for the national team.
48 players have been picked for the tournament with players of the national team featuring alongside players from High Performance (HP) unit and selected members of the 2020 ICC Under-19 World Cup champion squad.
The tournament is an opportunity for the young stars to showcase their talent while competing against experienced and up and coming players from the national team. The balance of the squads were ensured to provide meaningful competition and Minhajul was happy with the performances so far.
The likes of Irfan Shukkur, Towhid Hridoy have shown mettle in difficult match situations and youngsters like Mahedi Hasan and Afif Hossain are also leaving their mark.
"This tournament is a stage for us to see everyone is performing and in what positions they can play. We are watching the performances from everybody. The team management will sit down to judge and decide where these players can be used according to requirement," Minhajul said.
The tournament is also being used as an experiment to bring cricket back in the country in a bigger way which would eventually see the return of international cricket in the country.
"In this tournament we are prioritizing the players who are among our pool of international cricketers. The rest of the players will come in step by step and in the future tournament the number of players will increase. The next tournament will have five teams and player number will increase. The players are partaking in individual practice so we can bring in anyone as per requirement," the chief selector said.
