Mominul ton and Mehedi's three-for help Bangladesh stay on top
An unbeaten 51-run stand between Nkrumah Bonner and Kyle Mayers helped West Indies finish strong on a day that was marked by Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque's 10th Test ton at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chattogram today.
Bangladesh still have the upper hand in the game despite a strong finish from the Windies batsmen in the final session of the fourth day of the Chattogram Test. West Indies, who are on 110 for three at stumps, will still need 285 runs with seven wickets in hand on the final day of the first Test.
However, things could have gotten worse for the visitors as they were at one stage left reeling at 59 for three after off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz removed three of their top-order batsmen after Tea. Mehedi ended the day with figures of three for 52 in his 16 overs that featured two maidens.
But despite being asked questions by spinners Taijul, Miraz and Nayeem at times, Windies batsmen Bonner and Mayers still managed to put up a strong partnership after that, helping the visitors survive through the day without any more hiccups.
Earlier, it was a magnificent batting display from Bangladesh skipper Mominul, who became the player with most Test tons for Bangladesh, surpassing Tamim Iqbal, who has nine hundreds in Tests to his name. It was also the seventh Test ton for the player from Cox's Bazar at the ZACS.
Mominul also reached the landmark of scoring 3000 Test runs today. He is the joint-fastest with Tamim Iqbal to 3000 Test runs for Bangladesh as both the left-handers achieved the feat in 76 innings.
Liton Das played a crucial 112-ball 69, laced with five boundaries, in the middle to support Mominul and help Bangladesh post 223 for eight before declaring and setting a challenging 395-run target for the Windies.
After the exchange, Windies openers -- Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell -- scored 18 for no loss before Tea. But the Tigers started the final session brightly as Mehedi had Campbell trapped in front in the 17th over. Mehedi's biggest scalp was in his next over when he had Windies skipper Brathwaite edge one towards the short leg with substitute Yasir Ali, in for injured Shakib Al Hasan, holding on to a brilliant diving catch.
Mehedi picked up Shayne Moseley in the same spell as the visitors looked to be in deep trouble before Bonner and Mayers steadied the ship.
39.6 Ov; WI 110/3: Kyle Mayers defends a Taijul Islam delivery. No runs taken and that's Stumps.
Mehedi removes Moseley
28.6 Ov WI 77/3: Kyle Mayers drives uppishly towards covers off a Mehedi Hasan Miraz delivery and Tamim Iqbal, who was fielding at that position, drives forward and manages to just get his fingers on the ball. It seems as if Tamim has hurt his fingers and the left-hander is coming off now, probably to get some treatment. Bangladesh are already missing Shakib Al Hasan through injury and would not want the same to happen to another of their stalwarts.
24.2 Ov; WI 59/3: Mehedi Hasan Miraz gets another one. The ball came in towards the left-hander Shayne Moseley and kept low. Batsman fails to get a bat on it as the ball hits the pads. No confusion for the umpire and the batsman also walks without challenging the decision. Mehedi gets all three Windies wickets that fell so far. Mehedi strikes twice in quick succession
18.3 Ov; WI 48/2: Mehedi Hasan Miraz gets another one and this time it's the important wicket of Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite. A tossed up delivery around off and Brathwaite goes forward and defends it. The ball gets an inside edge on to the pads and goes to the right of the short leg. Yasir Ai, who is playing as the substitute of injured Shakib Al Hasan, dives to his right and takes a brilliant catch. Kraigg Brathwaite c sub (Yasir Ali) b Mehidy Hasan Miraz 20 (53b 2x4 0x6) SR: 37.74
Mehedi gives Tigers breakthrough
16.1 Ov; WI 39/1: John Campbell tries to sweep an outside off delivery from Mehedi Hasan Miraz but misses it as the ball hits him on his pads. A huge appeal from Bangladesh players and the umpire obliges. However, Campbell opts for a review. As the review showed, there was no bat involved and the ball would have gone to hit the stumps. The initial decision stays and Mehedi gives Bangladesh the important breakthrough. John Campbell lbw b Mehidy Hasan Miraz 23 (50b 4x4 0x6) SR: 46
2:30pm: Taijul Islam to resume proceedings after Tea
Uphill task awaits Windies batsmen
An uphill task awaits the West Indies batsmen after Tea on the fourth day of their first of two Tests against hosts Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram today. A century from Bangladesh Test skipper Mominul Haque and another 112-ball 69 from Liton Das helped Bangladesh set a challenging 395-run target before declaring at 223 for eight. West Indies openers -- skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell -- looked comfortable for the brief period they batted in the session. The openers would need to come up with a big partnership if the visitors are to even have any chance to win the game. The Windies are 18 without a loss and need 377 runs to win the game.

The premier all-rounder has however been seen at the dugout with his teammates.
Meanwhile, West Indies batsmen will have their work out coming in to chase a big target as the pitch is expected to wear and tear more in the last two days, aiding the spinners more as time passes. West Indies will have to bat about half-an-hour before Tea.

Musfiqur goes to his back foot and tries to cut it but the ball kept low and it hits him on his pads. And after repeated appeal from Cornwall umpire raises his finger.
