'It’s not like I don't field at point'
That Bangladesh do not have a designated number of players for high intensity catching positions, especially where quick reflexes are needed, can be baffling. However, having dropped three more catches on the Day 2 of the second Test against Sri Lanka today, Taijul Islam -- who himself was unable to take one -- reiterated that the point or gully position was not unknown to him but dropped catches are part of the game.
Bangladesh however do not have any specialized fielders for the most difficult position in the field, namely point and gully. Taijul is one of Bangladesh's more reliable fielders but when the ball flashed to him off the bowling of Abu Jayed, Taijul failed to react sharply enough and hold on to it. Sri Lanka were four down at that point and another wicket could have really set them back.
"Normally I field at the point or short gully region in Tests, depending on the situation. Dropped catches are part of the game but that drop may have forced our team to go on the back foot," Taijul reiterated during a virtual press conference today.
Even though he did not skirt the question of whether he was a designated fielder for the gully or point position, he said: "If I was able to take that catch, we could have been in a very good position. But it's not like I don't field at point."
