Lack of options keeping Domingo on the job?

Star Sports Report

Head coach Russell Domingo had no concerns over keeping his job when he talked to the media after the Tigers' tour of Sri Lanka and it appears that Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are unlikely to look to replace him at the moment if board President Nazmul Hassan's words are anything to go by.

The BCB president talked about in clear terms the lack of availability of an alternative to Domingo when speaking to the media yesterday.

"There are two or three things here [we need to understand]. The first thing is whether we will renew his contract or not. The second thing is that if we don't do that, then there will have to be an alternative, right? Under the current Covid-19 situation, we do not have anything like that. This is the reality," the BCB president had said yesterday while talking to reporters.

It appears that the board is less than convinced with Tigers' performance under the South African. Thus, Khaled Mahmud had been on the recent tour of Sri Lanka not only to give confidence to the players but also to oversee Domingo's mode of working.

The Tigers have lost seven out of nine Tests under Domingo's reign, winning one and drawing one. They lost a home Test against Afghanistan which has been the lowest point for the Tigers in Test format. Bangladesh fared better under him in ODIs, winning seven out of nine matches. The Tigers clinched series against Zimbabwe and West Indies at home but slumped to a 3-0 series whitewash against the Kiwis in New Zealand. In T20Is, Bangladesh have won only six out of 14 matches under him.

It would appear from the BCB president's speech that an unavailability of options, which also can be attributed to BCB's lack of scouting regarding coaching options, is the only real thing keeping Domingo on the job despite the fact that the Tigers, may have relieved some pressure following their win yesterday against a weakened Sri Lanka outfit.
