Windies make early inroads before stumps on day three

Ban 1st in: 430 all out; WI 1st in: 259 all out
Star Online Report

4:30 PM: Stumps - 19.6 ov; Ban 47/3: Cornwall to Mominul, who defends it with soft hands and that is stumps on day three. 11 wickets have fallen on the day as spinners have dictated terms. It was Miraz in the session after lunch and Cornwall after tea, who did the damage. West Indies lost their last five wickets in a hurry but Bangladesh have not had a good start to their second innings, losing Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hossain and Shadman Islam early before Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim saw them through to stumps. Bangladesh lead by 218 runs with seven wickets remaining. Expect the pitch to offer more awkward bounce and turn as the match progresses. Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan suffered another groin injury as was revealed by MRI scans today. The BCB will be keeping him under observations. It is not quite yet clear whether he will play any further part in this Test match after he did not come onto the field today during West Indies' innings.

Mushy gets lucky

17.4 ov; Ban 40/3: Cornwall pitches it just outside the off stump of Mushfiqur Rahim, who looked to play forward but changed his mind after the ball took off. Extra bounce and man at short leg catches it. Windies appeal but umpire turns them down. They do not opt for a review but they should have as replays later reveal ball hit Mushfiqur's gloves. He can count himself very lucky there.

Gabriel removes Shadman

14.1 ov; Ban 33/3: Shannon Gabriel gets this right upto Shadman's ears. Awkward delivery for the left-hander to deal with. Cannot get on top of it neither get out of the way. As was earlier mentioned, there is something in the pitch if one can generate pace and bouce. The ball gets the better of Shadman as he looks to fend it off without his eyes on the ball. Wicket-keeper takes the catch. Shadman Islam c †Da Silva b Gabriel 5 (42b 0x4 0x6) SR: 11.9

Mominul, Shadman look to settle in after early wickets

Mominul and Shadman are slowly looking to get their eyes in but it does not feel like an easy pitch to bat on. It's strange that for all the talk of focusing on building pace strength by playing them more at home, Bangladesh had picked just Mustafizur Rahman as the sole pacer. Meanwhile, as is being evidenced by some deliveries from Shannon Gabriel, there are serpents in this pitch with some deliveries getting quite a bit of lift. Mustafizur on the other hand has already had two warnings for getting into the danger zone of the pitch and one more would see him barred from bowling any more overs.

Tigers lose Tamim, Najmul early

1.6 ov; Ban 1/2: Cornwall gets another one. Najmul looks to poke at the length delivery and is caught at slip. Terrific start for the Windies with the ball. Najmul Hossain Shanto c Blackwood b Cornwall 0 (2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0

1.4 ov; Ban 1/1: Windies have a early wicket and it is Tamim Iqbal. Cornwall pitches it in and around the off stump line and Tamim despite getting a good stride in, has been given out. The left-hander reviews but it was pitching in line and going to hit the wicket. Umpire stays with his original decision. Tamim Iqbal lbw b Cornwall 0 (4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0

West Indies bowled out for 259 as spinners wrap things up quickly

In the space of 23 deliveries and six runs, West Indies have lost their last five wickets following a 99-run stand between Blackwood and Da Silva. Mehedi Miraz is the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with four wickets. It is turning out to be a great Test match for Mehedi following his maiden Test ton yesterday.

96.1 ov; WI 259 all out: Jomel Warrican goes for a wild slog off a Taijul Islam delivery and misses it completely as the ball turns a bit away from the right-hander and hits the top of off stump. That's it. West Indies bundled out for 259.  Jomel Warrican b Taijul Islam 4 (7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 57.14

95.1 ov, WI 259/9: Mehedi gets his counterpart Cornwall. Looks to play through the line over the bowler but is castled. Rahkeem Cornwall b Mehedi Hasan Miraz 2 (6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

93.4 ov; 253/8: Mehedi has struck again. Roach goes aerial and finds the man at mid wicket. Kemar Roach c sub (Mohammad Mithun) b Mehedi Hasan Miraz 0 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0

93.1; WI 253/7: That's the crucial wicket. Blackwood falls to Mehedi Miraz. Jermaine Blackwood c †Liton Das b Mehedi Hasan Miraz 68 (146b 9x4 0x6) SR: 46.58

93.3 ov; WI 253/6: Nayeem finally gets the breakthrough that Tigers were looking for. Gets the outside edge of Da Silva's bat. Joshua Da Silva c †Liton Das b Nayeem Hasan 42 (141b 3x4 1x6) SR: 29.79

Mustafizur gets his second warning

Fizz has been told to tread carefully by the umpire after he treaded too much into the danger zone in line with the stumps. That was Fizz's second official warning. One more and he will not be able to bowl any further in this match.

91.6 ov WI 249/5: West Indies are slowly but surely gaining an edge in this match through this partnership. If Mustafizur, who is the only pacer in the lineup, cannot bowl following another warning, its not going to be easy for the Tigers with Shakib likely not being able to bowl anymore.

Update on Shakib

JUST IN: "Premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has suffered a strain in a different region of his left thigh while fielding on day two. The injury was confirmed by an MRI scan this morning. The BCB medical team will continue to treat and review his progress over the course of the first Test," BCB provides update on Shakib's latest injury.

Mustafizur Rahman is back in the attack.

79.1 ov; WI 219/5: A drive through cover for four runs off Mehedi allows Blackwood to reach his fifty.

69.5 ov; WI 204/5: A single from Blackwood brings up the fifty partnership between him and Da Silva.

68.1 ov; WI 200/5: Blackwood has been able to counterattack in this innings and has put together a decent partnership with Da Silva. Works a Taijul delivery for two runs and that brings up the 200 for West Indies.

12:15 PM: The second session has begun following lunch on day three. Taijul Islam starts with a maiden over.

Spinners dictate terms in first session

61.6 ov; WI 189/5: Mehedi's delivery turns sharply after pitching and almost makes its way through Blackwood's defences. Seems to have missed bat completely and Bangladesh appeal for leg-before. Turned down. And that is Lunch on day three.

60.4 ov; WI 181/5: Taijul delivery keeps low and there is a noise as the ball passes Da Silva's bat on it's way to the wicket-keeper. The Bangladesh players' appeal is turned down and the Tigers opt for the review. Review lost. No bat involved. The bat brushed the pads by the looks of it.

The last 10 overs have produced 27 runs but more importanly for the visitors no wickets have been lost. West Indies are 181 for five with lunch beckoning on day three.

49.6 ov; WI 154/5: Mehedi Miraz strikes. Mayers had been playing well but could not decide whether to play in the back foot or not. Caught in-between and misses the line of the delivery as ball hits his pads. Mayers does not take a review after umpire raises his finger. Kyle Mayers lbw b Mehidy Hasan Miraz 40 (65b 7x4 0x6) SR: 61.54

No Shakib on the pitch

Meanwhile word is that Shakib Al Hasan, who did not take the field today, went to hospital for scans this morning. Apparently an old groin injury resurfaced following a blow that he suffered during fielding on the second day of the ongoing Test match.

Nayeem turner leaves Brathwaite baffled

40.2 ov; WI 130/4: Windies have lost another one and it's the all-important wicket of the skipper. It's Nayeem with a turner and ball pitches outside off and Brathwaite leaves it all alone as it crashes onto his pads. No shot offered and it's been given out leg-before. Kraigg Brathwaite b Nayeem Hasan 76 (111b 12x4 0x6) SR: 68.47

Windies are going through another rebuilding phase after losing a wicket in the very first delivery of the day. Kyle Mayers has been assertive since coming onto the crease after Bonner's first-ball departure to Taijul.

WI: 117/3 after 38 overs
Kraigg Brathwaite 66 (105); Kyle Mayers24 (30)
Taijul Islam 10-2-26-1; Nayeem Hasan5-0-14-0

31.5 ov; WI 87/3: Brathwaite gets a single to bring up his fifty.

Taijul bags wicket with first ball of the day

29.1 ov; WI 75/3: It only took Bangladesh the first delivery of the day to make the breakthrough. It's Taijul and it's well flighted and draws Bonner forward before taking the outside edge. Najmul at slips takes the catch. Nkrumah Bonner c Najmul Hossain Shanto b Taijul Islam 17 (59b 2x4 0x6) SR: 28.81

Brathwaite, Bonner rebuilds after Fizz's strikes

Welcome to the third day's play in the first Test between Bangladesh and the West Indies at Chattogram today. Windies captain Brathwaite and batsmen Bonner had built up a pretty good partnership before stumps yesterday. Mustafizur Rahman, the sole paceman in the playing eleven had picked up both Windies wicket yesterday. Bangladesh's first innings ended at 430 after Mehedi Miraz's fantastic maiden Test ton yesterday. West Indies duo then played out the rest of the third session after Fizz's strikes.

10.6 Overs; WI 24/2: A brilliant yorker from Mustafizur Rahman and hits Shayne Moseley directly on his boot. A huge appeal and given out by the umpire. West Indies challenge the umpire's decision and take a review. The review shows that there was no bat involved as the ball would have gone to hit middle and leg stump. Mustafizur, who has been troubling the Windies batsmen for a while now, gets his second wicket and leaves West Indies in a spot of bother. Shayne Moseley lbw b Mustafizur Rahman 2 (23b 0x4 0x6) SR: 8.7

4.4 Overs; WI 11/1: A length ball from Mustafizur Rahman that was angling in towards the left-hander John Campbell. Campbell tries to flick it but misses it as the ball goes on to hit his pads. A huge appeal from Bangladesh players but the umpire gives not out. Bangladesh players review and it shows that the ball would have gone to hit leg stump. The umpire changes his original decision and Mustafizur draws first blood. John Campbell lbw b Mustafizur Rahman 3 (15b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20
