Is Bazball over?: Root, Fleming appointments signal new era

Joe Root was reappointed England's Test captain yesterday, while former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming was named head coach, as England ushered in a new era following the end of the Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum partnership.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the appointments after sacking McCullum as Test coach and following the shock retirement of Stokes earlier this month.

Stokes, 35, stepped away from international cricket after returning to action following the fallout from a London nightclub incident in which teammate Gus Atkinson was also present. The all-rounder had backed Harry Brook as his successor, but the 27-year-old, who already captains England's white-ball sides, was overlooked.

McCullum, who remains in charge of England's limited-overs teams, paid the price for a run of poor results and a series of off-field controversies. England's 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand in June followed a disastrous Ashes campaign in Australia, leaving the ECB searching for a reset.

Root will begin his second spell as captain in the three-Test series against Pakistan, starting at Headingley on August 19, while Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim coach before Fleming takes charge later in the year to begin preparations for the South Africa Test tour in December.

The 35-year-old already holds England records for the most Tests as captain (65) and most victories (27). He led the side from 2017 to 2022 and briefly resumed the role during the recent New Zealand series after Stokes' suspension.

Root, second only to Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time Test run-scoring list with 14,114 runs, welcomed Fleming as "an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game".

The 53-year-old Fleming has never coached a national side but is one of cricket's most decorated coaches, guiding Chennai Super Kings to five Indian Premier League titles during a 17-year coaching spell. As New Zealand captain, he won 28 of his 80 Tests – the most – and scored 7,172 runs in 111 appearances.

"I'm particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain -- a generational talent who has achieved so much already. There is still plenty more to come from him,” Fleming said. .

The appointments effectively close the chapter on the ultra-aggressive "Bazball" philosophy that transformed England in 2022. McCullum and Stokes revived a side that had won just one of its previous 17 Tests, winning 10 of their first 12 together. But the momentum faded. England won only 17 of their next 37 Tests, losing 18, failing to beat either Australia or India in a series, and going without a multi-match series victory since December 2024.

Root's return is hardly a surprise given England's limited leadership options. Brook already shoulders the white-ball captaincy, while names such as Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett lack significant leadership experience.

The bigger question is not who replaced Stokes, but what England's Test identity now becomes. Under McCullum, Root once reverse-scooped the opening ball of an Ashes Test in the name of fearless cricket. Whether that spirit survives, or England return to a more measured, traditional approach under Root and Fleming, may define the next chapter of English Test cricket.
