PSG eye Super Cup repeat

Paris Saint-Germain will look to add another piece of silverware to their remarkable European haul when they face Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg tonight. 

The Champions League holders are bidding to become only the fourth club to retain the trophy, while Europa League winners Villa are chasing their first Super Cup title. Beyond the trophy, PSG can continue their dominance under Luis Enrique, while Villa have the chance to make history on their return to the competition.

** PSG can become only the fourth team to win consecutive UEFA Super Cups, after Ajax (1973-74), AC Milan (1989-90), and Real Madrid (2016-17).

** A victory for PSG would deliver Luis Enrique his 13th trophy as PSG coach.

** Villa coach Unai Emery has lost all three of his previous UEFA Super Cup matches, while PSG’s Enrique has won both of his.

** Villa are appearing in the Super Cup for only the second time. They won their only previous appearance, beating Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate in 1983.

** PSG are set to appear in their third Super Cup match, losing 9-2 on aggregate to Juventus in 1997 before the penalty shootout win over Spurs last year.

** PSG have scored in 28 consecutive competitive matches, their longest such run since a 36-game streak from September 2019 to July 2020.

** This will be just the third meeting between PSG and Villa after they met across two legs in the 2024-25 Champions League quarterfinals. PSG won 3-1 at home in the last eight before progressing 5-4 on aggregate, despite a 3-2 loss at Villa Park.

** Somalia’s Omar Artan will officiate the Super Cup after being denied entry to the United States and subsequently missing the 2026 World Cup. US authorities said he was “associated with suspected members of terrorist organisations”, an allegation Artan rejected. UEFA then appointed him for the Super Cup, giving him his first European assignment. He will also become the first Somali referee to officiate a UEFA match.
