Humility central to Diaz’s journey

In the Diaz household, football was never merely a pastime; it was woven into the fabric of everyday life. For Luis Manuel Diaz, the family patriarch, the game represented identity, discipline and hope. Having played as an amateur footballer and worked at youth development centres, he naturally became the first guide for a boy who would one day carry Colombia's dreams on his shoulders.

Long before packed stadiums and international acclaim, Luis Diaz was simply a child fascinated by anything that could roll beneath his feet.

"When Luis started crawling around at home, he'd pick up little stones and roll them with his foot," Diaz Sr recalled in an interview with FIFA. "I looked after the pitches at the academy, and he would always cry, 'I want to go, I want to go'."

Those early signs were impossible to ignore. Growing up in La Guajira, Diaz displayed a passion for football that surpassed ordinary childhood enthusiasm. While other children spent hours in the streets, his world revolved around the game.

"Luis was a football-mad kid, disciplined, attentive and always willing to listen when people offered him advice," his father said.

Yet football was not the only lesson Luis Manuel wanted his son to learn. Determined to raise a grounded young man, he often reminded Diaz that life extended beyond the boundaries of a pitch.

"He was very well-mannered, focused on his own things, always at home," he said. "Hanging around in the street wasn't his thing because he was all about football."

Hours would pass as the youngster trained, played and honed his skills. Bringing him home was often a challenge.

"He'd head down to the pitches for hours on end because he loved the game and always wanted to be there. He hated it when we picked him up. We tried to hold him back, but it didn't work; now look where we are."

As Diaz entered his teenage years, his father became increasingly convinced that his son's talent could open doors to the highest levels of the sport.

"Once he was 10 or 12, you could really see the footballer in him," he explained. "The touch, the skill, the way he moved the ball, he had it all."

The journey, however, was far from straightforward. Diaz did not benefit from a conventional pathway through youth academies. By the time he arrived at Barranquilla Futbol Club, he was already nearing adulthood. But his rise was swift and undeniable. Soon after, he earned a place in Colombia's Under-20 side and began attracting wider attention.

The day his name appeared on the national team list remains etched in his family's memory.

"They announced the goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and finally the forwards," Diaz Sr remembered. "Then we heard it: Luis Diaz. It was pure joy and immense pride for all of us."

Today, Diaz stands among Colombia's brightest stars, admired not only for his dazzling technique but also for his humility.

"He has never forgotten where he comes from," his father said. "We come from humble beginnings, and humility has always shaped us."

For Luis Manuel, that remains his son's greatest achievement. Beyond the trophies, accolades and expectations of a football-loving nation, Luis Diaz is still the boy from La Guajira whose only dream was to play football.
