Bangladesh women qualify for Asian Games after Hong Kong win
Bangladesh women’s hockey team booked their place in the upcoming Asian Games after securing a 2–1 victory over Hong Kong in their Pool A final match of the Women’s Asian Games Qualifiers in Jakarta, Indonesia today.
Needing just a single point to confirm qualification for the Asian Games in September in their debut international campaign, Bangladesh went one better, collecting all three points in a spirited performance.
Nadira Ema and Kona Akhter scored one goal each for Bangladesh, while Law Ka Mun Melissa netted the lone goal for Hong Kong.
Hong Kong struck first in the opening minute when Melissa produced a fine finish, deflecting in a powerful cross from Lau Pui Sze on the right flank.
Bangladesh, however, regrouped quickly and found rhythm through controlled build-up play. Ema restored parity with a composed finish, before Kona Akhter set up the equaliser from the left flank in the 10th minute.
Bangladesh pressed forward afterwards but missed a couple of chances, sending efforts wide, while goalkeeper Mohua made a key save in the second quarter to keep the score level.
After the break, Bangladesh looked more organised and earned several penalty corners, though they failed to convert.
The winner came in the 39th minute when Kona Akhter lifted a clever chip over Hong Kong goalkeeper Wong Ching, finishing off a well-timed pass from Ema.
With the win, Bangladesh now have two victories and a draw, topping Pool B. The final group standings will be confirmed after the match between Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei, with the latter already on four points from two games.
