The crest scandal
NEEDLESS to say that we are still smarting under the shocking effects of having distributed counterfeit crests to our foreign friends who contributed in our Liberation War. The outrage needs a respectable closure through a process of accountability. The probe committee for going into the matter of counterfeit crests has identified 13 suspects including a former state minister.
It appears that Tk. 7.04 crore was embezzled through the procurement process. It is not the amount of money but sheer disregard for the country's image that is all the more hurtful. In the wake of such disgraceful incident we expect the procurement process in regard to national awards to be impervious to corruption and that it will be monitored at every step of the way.
In the aftermath of the scam, it was decided that the recipients will be requested to return the crests in exchange for the ones made with genuine gold. Surely the government will ensure all necessary measures to reach out to our foreign friends with the genuine crests. It is the mindset of making money out of a prestigious event that has smeared our image. The culpability of the offence is unforgivable.
We want the culprits to be brought to justice.
