Winter Vegetables For a Hungry Dhaka

Winter Vegetables For a Hungry Dhaka

The districts around Dhaka meet a large chunk of the demand for winter vegetables in the capital. Some farmers even harvest crops three times in just one winter season to keep up with the ever increasing demand. Beans, tomato, spinach, beet, turnip, radish, carrot, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumber, gourd, snake gourd, ladies' finger, potato, green peas and pumpkin are grown. They are then shipped to local markets from where wholesalers ship them to the capital. The consumers buy them from kitchen markets as well as in chain stores. They pay a lot to buy the vegetables. The people who actually grow them do not even get half the price of what consumers pay at shops. Photos were taken from Narsingdi and Munshiganj districts.
