Writ against big bellied cops in Kolkata
The Kolkata High Court today directed the authorities concerned to submit a fitness status report of the policemen in the West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police forces in a month.
Division bench of the HC headed by Chief Justice Nishita Matre and Justice Tapobrata Chakraborty ordered the West Bengal home secretary after a South Kolkata resident Kamal Dey filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) over the unfitness of state's policemen and its effect on law and order, reports our Kolkata correspondent.
The petitioner had submitted some photographs and video clips of policemen bellies. He even submitted photographs of overweight policemen dozing off on duty, to prove his point.
The petitioner argued that the policemen ought to maintain their fitness throughout the career and not just during the initial days.
He also said that due to hanging bellies, the policemen are often unable to chase offenders like in 'Barfi [a Bollywood film]!' and due to lethargy, hesitate to investigate a case a file a charge sheet and instead file a Final Report True (FRT).
