Amassing wealth is 'normal'!

Amassing wealth is 'normal'!

We could not disagree more

WHEN none other than the finance minister of the country comes out with a statement that power and money go hand in hand, we are at a total loss for words! Mr. Muhith through his statement has unwittingly endorsed graft. Though his personal wealth statement has not raised much of an eyebrow, we are more than taken aback at the disclosure of many of his colleagues in the cabinet and parliament which is akin, one could almost say to the phrase 'rags to riches'. How obtuse can one get when making an outlandish remark like that is beyond our scope of thinking.
The contradictory statements made by the minister continue to baffle us. Whilst it is now 'normal' for lawmakers to be in possession of massive amounts of wealth, he has nonetheless mentioned that the anti-graft body (ACC) and national board of revenue should look into the matter to scrutinise the manner in which these riches were gained. Given that the ACC's wings have been clipped to the point that it must first seek permission from the government to investigate any alleged case of graft against ruling MPs, the possibility of any such move remains slim at best. We are aghast at the casualness of such a remark coming from someone of Mr. Muhith's stature. One can only hope it was not made in a serious vein.
