Business leaders' legitimate demands
WE fully endorse the sentiments of the RMG owners who have threatened to go for tougher programmes should the two parties fail to reach a consensus and bring the current spate of violence, unrest and death and destruction to a stop.
The business leaders have spoken the minds of the people of the country. They have spoken being sufferers of the current unrest, like the rest of us. And their distress is actually the anguish of the entire country, that has very long term consequences on the economy and therefore on the stability of the country. And we are shocked at the appalling indifference of the two leaders to the potential dangers the country faces due to the political unrest, a product of their inflexible attitude.
The readymade garment sector has been under severe strain particularly in the last one year. It has been afflicted by calamities, most of them self-inflicted. Added to that have been several incidents of arson that can be only described as planned and deliberate acts of sabotage. And only when it was recovering a bit we have the hartals and oborodhs that have severely affected the export of finished goods, and the buyers are seeking other sources in our place.
This destructive politics must stop immediately. We repeat what we have said so many times in this column, the policies of the two parties are gradually pushing the country towards an abyss. And the only way to avoid falling over that is an immediate understanding between the two.
