Biman Bangladesh Airlines today signed a deal with US aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing to purchase 14 aircraft, marking the largest fleet expansion in the national carrier’s history.

Under the agreement, Biman will buy eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and four Boeing 737-8 MAX jets, with an estimated list value of around $3.7 billion.

The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in November 2031, while the rest are expected to arrive by October 2035.

Biman Managing Director and CEO Kaizer Sohel Ahmed signed the agreement on behalf of the airline, while Boeing Vice President Paul Righi signed for the manufacturer in the presence of senior Bangladesh government officials, diplomats and aviation executives at a Dhaka hotel.

Civil Aviation State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and US Ambassador Brent T Christensen, among others, attended the ceremony.

Paul Righi said Biman will become one of the few carriers worldwide to operate the entire Boeing 787 Dreamliner family, including the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 models.

He said the 787-10 will increase capacity on high-demand routes, including the Middle East, while the 787-9 will be used for long-haul routes to Europe and North America.

He added that the 787 and 737 aircraft families offer up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency compared to the planes they replace and improve passenger comfort with advanced cabin features.
