Selim Barkat made chairman of FinExcel

Financial Excellence Ltd (FinExcel) has appointed Selim Barkat as chairman of the company.

Selim brings nearly four decades of leadership experience in banking and financial services in Bangladesh and the United States. His areas of expertise include strategic leadership, corporate governance, risk management, transaction banking, treasury and capital markets, according to a press release.

Most recently, he served as regional general manager of Habib Bank Limited (HBL) for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. In the role, he helped drive the bank’s strategic transformation in the South Asia region.

Earlier, he held senior positions at Citibank and Citigroup in Bangladesh and New York.

He was involved in global business management and later worked as a portfolio banker covering credit and counterparty-risk portfolios for investment banks, broker-dealers, financial market intermediaries and the North American insurance industry.

He also played a key role in establishing Citibank, National Association’s first branch in Bangladesh.

As chairman, Barkat will bring his international banking experience, strategic vision and focus on risk management and corporate governance to FinExcel.

He holds an MBA in finance from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) at the University of Dhaka.

He also served as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Business School, Rutgers University, US.
