CU student alleges sexual harassment on moving bus in Ctg city

Accused handed over to police, says CU assistant proctor

A female student of the University of Chittagong (CU) was allegedly sexually harassed by a passenger on a moving bus while returning to campus from the port city today.

The victim is a student of the university’s 2019–20 academic session.

According to campus sources, the incident occurred around 4:30pm when the bus of Drutojan Paribahan reached Chowdhuryhat area. A man seated behind the student allegedly touched her body through the gap between the seats.

The victim immediately protested, but the accused claimed he had been asleep and that the contact was unintentional. As news of the incident spread among passengers, other commuters and CU students on board expressed outrage.

Students informed the university’s proctorial body and Chittagong University Central Students' Union (Cucsu) Communication and Accommodation Affairs Secretary Ishaq Bhuiyan. Following their advice, the accused was taken to the police box on the CU campus.

Students said the man identified himself as Md Babul, 37, a mason from Muradnagar, Cumilla, is currently residing in the Fatehabad area of Chattogram.

CU Assistant Proctor Nurul Hamid Kanan told reporters that the accused admitted to his wrongdoing. At the demand of the victim and other students present, he was handed over to Hathazari Police Station.
