Atul Khare agrees with Dhaka's request for taking more cops
United Nations Under Secretary General Atul Khare yesterday said he will inform the Department of Peacekeeping Operations of the request of Bangladesh for increasing the number of Bangladesh police forces in peacekeeping missions as it is logical.
Khare made the assurance when he made a courtesy call to the Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque at Police Headquarters.
Terming Bangladeshi peacekeepers "truly professional," Atul Khare lauded Bangladesh Police for its contribution in peacekeeping over the last 25 years.
He said Bangladesh police personnel not only are playing role in peacekeeping, they are also acting as "change agents" in Bangladesh gaining experiences from different countries for fighting violence against women, domestic violence and for ensuring women's rights.
IGP Shahidul mentioned that a unit of police who are proficient in French is ready to join the UN peacekeeping forces to work in French speaking communities.
He requested the UN official to increase number of police forces in the missions.
Over 1,100 police personnel are working in 10 peacekeeping missions across the world.
