BCC cleaners pile up garbage at land office

Cleaners and sweepers of Barisal City Corporation yesterday piled up garbage in front of the assistant commissioner's (land) office after a mobile court convicted one of their colleagues for dumping waste on the same spot.

They also demonstrated at the land office in the city's Launch Ghat area for around four hours from 11:00am after the court, led by Executive Magistrate Md Iliasur Rahman, also the assistant commissioner (land), had jailed Saddam Hossain for 15 days.

However, Additional District Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted Saddam bail for seven days when he appealed to him, said Dipak Lal Mridha, cleanig officer of BCC.

Iliasur Rahman alleged that BCC turned the land office's main entrance into a "garbage station" and it continued dumping waste despite their repeated requests to remove those.

Finding no other suitable places, they had to dump garbage there for a year, said BCC Cheif Executive Officer Ranajit Kumar, adding that they decided to change the spot.
