Cabinet okays draft changes to lower courts' monetary jurisdictions

The cabinet yesterday approved the draft "Civil Courts (Amendment) Act, 2015" expanding the monetary jurisdiction of lower court judges for ensuring speedy disposal of civil cases.

According to the draft law, district judges will deal with civil cases of asset value of Tk 5 crore instead of existing Tk 5 lakh while assistant judges will handle civil cases of Tk 15 lakh from Tk 2 lakh and senior assistant judges Tk 25 lakh from Tk 4 lakh.

Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed journalists after the  meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. It also approved the draft "Bangladesh Coast Guard Act 2015" keeping a provision of the capital punishment for  mutiny.
