Canadian envoy in Bangladesh lauded the government for holding recent city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong observing that the elections brought back normalcy to public life, which was jeopardised by political violence.

He said that despite some reported disturbances occurred in the polls, these elections eventually de-escalated the violence.

Canadian High Commissioner Benoit-Pierre Laramee made the remarks when he met Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the foreign ministry yesterday morning.

"The high commissioner described his personal experience saying that he found the polling agents of the BNP-backed candidates in various polling centres of Mirpur area on the election day even after BNP withdrew from the elections," said a foreign ministry press release.
