4 Ashuganj power units trip
Four out of five operational units at the Ashuganj Power Station tripped this evening due to a technical fault at a sub-station of the country's second largest electricity plant, officials said.
The four units tripped around 6:00pm, and the restoration work is ongoing, said Nurul Alam, managing director of the state-run electricity plant.
"We hope we will be able to resume the operation of the units in an hour or two," he told The Daily Star.
Alam also said there is no reason to be concerned as there had been no physical damage from the sudden disruption.
"This type of problem happens at power plants. At Ashuganj, it is a local problem, and it has not affected the nationwide electricity supply."
Ashuganj Power Station is the second largest power supplier in the country, with generation capacity of 671 megawatts, or one tenth of the overall electricity production capacity of the country. It has seven units.
An official of the Power Development Board also said the shutdown of the four units did not disrupt power supply across the country, as power produced by other plants was enough to meet the national demand.
