8 cops hurt in attack
At least eight policemen were injured in an attack by gamblers at Kamalchari on the outskirts of the district town on Friday night. The injured are Sarwar Alam, 39, assistant superintendent of police, Mizanur Rahman, 40, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, Tarun Chakma, 38, assistant sub-inspector, and constables Arif, 26, Rana Pratap, 28, Najir, 30, Belal Hossain, 47, and Kalam, 22. Being informed that a gang was engaged in gambling in the area, a police team conducted a rail there at around 9:30 pm, said Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, superintendent of police. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gamblers hurled brick chips at them, leaving eight policemen injured. However, the gamblers managed to flee the scene, said the SP.
