Mousumi Hamid has been a familiar face across television, cinema and OTT for over a decade. She has earned the audience’s affection through varied work in all three mediums, and her recent performance in the web film “Djinner Bachcha” drew considerable praise.

This Eid, she appears in a seven-episode drama. She spoke to The Daily Star about her upcoming projects and the memories that Eid stirs in her.

Asked what it feels like to live the life of an artiste, Mousumi smiled while answering. “I love the artiste’s life. Wherever I am, people love me differently, they show me a kind of respect. If I was not an artiste, I probably wouldn’t have known any of this. I love acting and I am thoroughly enjoying doing it.”

On the experience of inhabiting different characters, she spoke with evident enthusiasm. “It feels wonderful. That is the artiste’s job — to merge into different lives, to become that character. Through each role, we become someone else entirely for the audience.”

She elaborated with examples drawn from her own career. “An actor has to become on screen what they are not in real life. We, artistes, work wholeheartedly to become that character. Then, when the work airs and people praise, it feels like the effort was worthwhile.”

For Eid, Mousumi has appeared in just one project — a seven-episode drama titled “Love Station”, directed by Shakal Ahmed and written by Brindabon Das.

“The director has made this drama with a lot of care,” she said. “We have all tried our best from our respective ends. My character is a little different. I have played the role of an emotional girl. Chanchal Chowdhury is also in it, along with several other familiar faces.”

Praise for co-star Chanchal Chowdhury came naturally to her. “What more can I say about him? He is a gifted artiste. When Chanchal Chowdhury is there, the work becomes better and beautiful.”

Mousumi will be spending Eid in Dhaka this year. “Though I will be in Dhaka for the Eid holiday, my mind drifts to my hometown, to those sweet memories. Eid in childhood was so joyful. Those memories certainly come back to me. The closer Eid gets, the more I remember.”

She noted that the feeling is universal. “The joy of that time and the joy of now are not the same. I think everyone’s childhood Eid memories come flooding back as Eid draws near.”

Mousumi has also completed work on a new film. Titled “Tribunal”, it is directed by Raihan Khan.
