BFAA election takes place today
The Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association (BFAA) is holding its biennial election today to elect its executive committee for the 2026–28 term. Voting began at 9 am at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) and will continue until 6 pm, with a one-hour break for Jumma prayers.
A total of 573 members are eligible to cast their votes. Although this year’s election features fewer star candidates than previous editions, campaigning has remained lively over the past month, with the BFDC buzzing with candidates, supporters and promotional activities.
Two panels are contesting the election. One is led by Shiba Sanu for president and Joy Chowdhury for general secretary, while the other is headed by Arman for president and Rumana Islam Mukti for general secretary. Both panels have expressed confidence in securing victory.
More than 10 independent candidates are also contesting various posts.
This year’s election has also been overshadowed by controversy over newly enrolled members. Critics have alleged that several new members were granted voting rights despite not meeting the association’s previous eligibility criteria of appearing in five films. Some reportedly acted in only two films as child artistes, while others are relatives of candidates or have yet to appear in a released film.
Outgoing president Misha Sawdagor defended the decision, saying the executive committee had reduced the requirement to two films because of the decline in film production.
Tight security has been arranged at the BFDC throughout the voting process. Police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and intelligence agencies have been deployed to ensure a peaceful election and prevent unauthorised entry into the premises.
