BFAA election: Shiba Sanu elected president, Joy Chowdhury becomes general secretary

Actor Shiba Sanu has been elected president, while actor Joy Chowdhury has been elected general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association for the 2026–2028 term.

The Election Commission officially announced the results at around 4:45 am today (July 4), following daylong voting at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) premises yesterday.

A total of 480 out of 573 registered voters cast their ballots in the biennial election. According to the Election Commission, 17 ballots were declared invalid after the vote count.

In the race for president, Shiba Sanu secured 243 votes, defeating fight director and actor Arman, who received 173 votes. For the post of general secretary, Joy Chowdhury emerged victorious with 237 votes, while his rival, Rumana Islam Mukti, garnered 179 votes.

In the vice-president category, DA Tayeb secured 260 votes and Elias Cobra received 216 votes, earning the two available positions. Fellow candidates Nuton and Rozina received 204 and 152 votes respectively.

Subrata was elected joint general secretary with 266 votes, defeating Rina Khan, who secured 150 votes.

For the post of organising secretary, Sony Rahman won with 233 votes, while Chunnu received 182 votes. Parvez Chowdhury Abir was elected international affairs secretary with 272 votes, defeating Popy, who secured 144 votes.

Jacky Alamgir was elected office and publicity secretary with 221 votes, while Russell Miah received 195 votes. In the contest for cultural and sports secretary, Maruf Akib won the post with 226 votes. Yusuf Khan and Mushfiqul Jamil received 72 and 118 votes respectively.

Kamruzzaman Kamal was elected treasurer with 221 votes, defeating Jadu Azad, who secured 197 votes.

The 11 candidates elected as executive members are Ali Raj, Kabila, Qayes Arju, Jesmin, Nasrin, Farhad, Shipon Mitra, Raka, Chikon Ali, Shirin Shila and Sushanta.

The election created a festive atmosphere at BFDC in the weeks leading up to the polls, with two full panels competing for leadership. The main contest was between the Arman–Mukti Panel and the Shiba Sanu–Joy Chowdhury Panel. Campaign activities, panel introduction events and voter engagement programmes kept the country's film industry buzzing ahead of the vote.

Voting was conducted peacefully throughout Friday. After polling concluded, the Election Commission sealed the ballot boxes and began counting votes in the evening. Following several hours of counting, the final results have been announced this morning.

The election was held under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner Kamal Mohammod Kibria Lipu. With the results now confirmed, Shiba Sanu and Joy Chowdhury will lead the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association for the next two years.
