Oscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn, best known for her acclaimed performance in “The Exorcist”, will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, organisers announced on Tuesday.

The honorary award recognises Burstyn’s remarkable career spanning nearly five decades, during which she has earned some of the entertainment industry’s highest accolades, including an Academy Award, Emmy Awards, Tony Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

Reacting to the announcement, Burstyn expressed her excitement and gratitude. “It’s incredible. I get to return to one of my favourite cities in the world and come home holding a Golden Lion. Receiving the Venice Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award is a tremendous honour. I am deeply grateful, thrilled and overwhelmed. It truly feels unbelievable,” she said.

Burstyn will receive the prestigious honour during the premiere of “Flesh Impact”, director Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s short film created to mark the centenary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth.

Festival organisers described Burstyn’s performance in the film as yet another example of her “extraordinary talent”. The cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard and Sepideh Moafi.

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival will run from September 2 to 12.
