Film Artistes Association term ends without active general secretary, new leadership ahead

The 2024–26 term of the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association (BFAA) has ended without much public attention, with the role of general secretary remaining largely inactive throughout the tenure.

In recent years, the position had been at the centre of intense competition, with actors Zayed Khan and Nipun Akter. Their rivalry, marked by public disputes and criticism, often drew widespread attention and commentary.

Association president Misha Sawdagor also maintained a low profile, spending much of his tenure abroad. He was absent during the final executive meeting held on April 22, and it remains unclear whether he will contest in the upcoming election.

In the absence of both the president and general secretary, executive members Rumana Islam Mukti and Sonny Rahman took on leading roles in maintaining the association’s activities. Mukti said decisions were taken in consultation with the president, and responsibilities were delegated when necessary.

Despite the leadership gaps, Mukti said the association’s work continued. “Even if only a few members remain active, it still reflects the work of the committee,” she noted.

Looking ahead, both Mukti and Sony Rahman have announced their intention to contest in the next election, with Mukti aiming for the general secretary post and Sony for organising secretary. Former organising secretary Joy Chowdhury has also declared his candidacy for general secretary.

Mukti said her focus would be on supporting artistes, including exploring housing solutions for members living in rented accommodation.

Joy, meanwhile, acknowledged that broader national circumstances limited the association’s activities over the past two years, but expressed hope for more meaningful initiatives in the future.

The next election of the Film Artistes Association is expected to take place in June or July, with candidates set to announce their manifestos and panels in the coming weeks.
