JnU Film Society condemns obstruction of film screening in Brahmanbaria
The Jagannath University Film Society (JnUFS) has strongly condemned what it described as fundamentalist interference in a film screening of “Bonolota Express” in Brahmanbaria, expressing deep concern over what it sees as growing attempts to obstruct cultural and creative activities across the country.
In a statement issued today, the organisation said incidents involving the disruption of cultural events and artistic practices have been increasing, posing a threat to freedom of expression as well as the country's democratic and progressive values.
"Any attempt to shrink the space for free expression and artistic practice is a threat not only to artists, filmmakers, and cultural activists, but also to society as a whole," the statement read.
Describing cinema as a powerful medium for portraying and analysing society, culture, history, and human experiences, JnUFS said films create space for raising questions, encouraging critical thought, and presenting alternative perspectives.
The organisation noted that efforts to halt film screenings or cultural programmes through intimidation, propaganda, or organised pressure run counter to the principles of free cultural practice and democratic engagement.

"If there is disagreement with any artistic work, it should be addressed through discussion, criticism, and reasoned debate, not through threats or attempts to stop its exhibition," the statement added.
JnUFS warned that such incidents could foster an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among artists, filmmakers, and cultural organisations, ultimately undermining the country's cultural development.
Expressing solidarity with film activists, cultural organisations, and citizens concerned about freedom of expression, the organisation called on the authorities to take effective measures to ensure the safety and uninterrupted continuation of film screenings and other cultural activities.
The statement was signed by the office secretary of the Jagannath University Film Society.
