My love for Argentina began with Maradona: Zahid Hasan
Zahid Hasan has long captivated audiences with his versatility, whether through his impeccable comic timing or his ability to evoke emotion with a simple expression. A familiar face on television since the 1990s, the veteran actor recently found a new generation of admirers through his performance in “Utshob”.
With World Cup fever sweeping across the country, The Daily Star caught up with the actor to learn more about his favourite team and his fondest football memories.
“I am very fond of sports, whether it is football or any other game,” said Zahid Hasan. “The World Cup has now begun, and the excitement will only grow in the coming days. I have been watching the matches regularly. Let’s see what happens.”
Asked about Argentina, Zahid Hasan said there is something special about the team’s style of play.
“There is something unique about the way Argentina plays. Of course, they have rhythm and flair, but there is also something distinctive about the team. That is why millions of people around the world support and love Argentina. I do too.”
The actor revealed that his admiration for Argentina began with football legend Diego Maradona.
“I do not remember the exact year, but it was definitely because of Maradona. I support Argentina because of Maradona. People of all ages loved watching him play. Whenever he was on the field, something extraordinary was bound to happen.”
Recalling the 1986 FIFA World Cup, he spoke fondly of watching Maradona in action.
“I still remember watching Maradona play in the 1986 World Cup. I watched those matches with immense excitement and joy. Those memories are unforgettable. Maradona had countless admirers, and I was one of those who deeply admired his style of play.”
When asked who he thinks could win this year’s World Cup, Zahid Hasan remained cautious.
“It is difficult to say anything with certainty right now. Victory and defeat are both part of the game. Every team that has come to play in the World Cup is trying to give its best. Let’s see what fate has in store for them.”
However, he made no secret of where his loyalties lie.
“I hope Argentina does well. There is no end to the love I have for my favourite team.”
The actor also shared memories of playing football during his younger days.
“Almost everyone in this country has played football at some point. It is hard to find someone who has never played the game. I played too. The memories of playing football during my childhood and school days still come vividly to mind. These are memories I will never forget.”
Commenting on Bangladesh’s passion for football, Zahid Hasan stressed the importance of preserving sportsmanship.
“That enthusiasm will always be there. However, the beauty of the game should never be lost, and our sense of brotherhood should never be harmed because of it.”
Looking ahead to Argentina’s next match, the actor expressed his excitement and optimism.
“Argentina play tomorrow, and I am looking forward to the match. I hope something good happens.”
