Tom Holland confirms Marvel has a plan to replace him in Spider-Man films

Tom Holland may have only just returned to the big screen as Peter Parker in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", which was released in theatres on July 31, but the actor is already thinking about the future of the iconic superhero and what his legacy will be once he eventually steps away from the role.

While fans are celebrating his return as Spider-Man, Holland has revealed that discussions are already underway about how his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will eventually come to an end. He also acknowledged that, when the time comes, the mantle of Spider-Man will be passed on to another actor.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while promoting the film, the 30-year-old actor said planning for his eventual exit began soon after the release of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021.

"We've been working on a plan ever since we finished 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'," Holland said. "It's all mapped out. Of course, it's going to evolve, but I have a very clear vision of how the baton will be passed on, and I think it's really exciting."

Holland added that he genuinely enjoys taking part in those conversations, saying that helping shape Spider-Man's future has become one of the aspects of the role he is most passionate about.

"I get really excited whenever we have these meetings and talk about it," he said. "It's definitely the thing I want to do most with this character."

Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War" before going on to headline several "Spider-Man" films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is the third actor to portray Peter Parker on the big screen, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

Reflecting on his own experience, Holland said he hopes to mentor the next actor to take on the role, just as Robert Downey Jr supported him during his early years in the franchise.

"Just as Robert Downey was a mentor to me throughout my first three films, I'd love to be that person for whoever takes on the role next," Holland told Esquire earlier this year.
