A sequel to Netflix’s hit animation “KPop Demon Hunters” is currently “in process”, according to the film’s songwriter Mark Sonnenblick, capping a remarkable year for the composer marked by major international recognition.
In 2026, Sonnenblick has already won a Golden Globe and a Grammy and received an Academy Award nomination for co-writing Golden, the film’s breakout track and the first K-pop song ever to win a Grammy. Speaking shortly after learning the song had been shortlisted for an Oscar, he described the moment as emotional and credited fans for the achievement.
“This song could have disappeared,” Sonnenblick said, noting that audience support helped propel the film and its music to global success.
While he suggested such an experience may never be repeated, conversations about continuing the “KPop Demon Hunters” story are underway. Creator Maggie Kang has previously indicated there is “definitely more” to explore with the characters. Sonnenblick added that any follow-up would involve a full development process before songwriting begins, with the music expected to emerge from the evolving narrative.
Alongside the potential sequel, Sonnenblick is preparing for the London premiere of his new stage musical, Midnight at the Never Get, opening in July at the Menier Chocolate Factory and running through September 2026. The production stars Tony Award-winning actor Ben Platt and centres on the relationship between a singer and a songwriter in an illegal gay bar in 1960s New York.

Platt praised the score and character depth of Sonnenblick’s work, saying he was “bowled over” after hearing the songs. He also joins a growing list of high-profile performers returning to London’s theatre scene in the coming years, including Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey, who are set for a reunion production in 2027.
Sonnenblick, who previously collaborated with Sir Elton John on “The Devil Wears Prada” musical, said London offers an inspiring and supportive environment for new theatrical work. With awards momentum behind him and multiple projects ahead, the songwriter appears poised to extend the success of “KPop Demon Hunters” into both film and stage.
