Sounds of the night

Mahmudur Rahman

The night was still, sacred and dark
Save for the glowing hues of a half moon
That hung high in the sky
And the contrasting amber of cheerful electric lights.

Crickets buzzed in a melody of rhythm
Frogs croaked their own as if to keep tune
An almost perfect symphony of symmetry
Directed by nature, composed by none

Exploding crackers of a festival
That lit up the heavens
Shattering the peace of the senses
Was merely an annoyance made of man

A distraction that was merely so
Ignored by the harmony of sound
Or the effervescent bubbles of animated discourse
Of long lost friendship coming together

And then natural dichotomy appeared
A lone frog croaked out of concert
A soft swish of water
As a curious solitary fish swam close to the surface

A train rumbled past
Its' echo resounding off the metal of the bridge
Cars whisked past in the distance
Adding dimension to the melody

The tap tap of a message sent on a phone
Was strangely out of place
The rude ring tones shattering in unchained rudeness
The pensiveness of dreamy thoughts

It was time to go
To let nature have its way
Each actor to his own role
As night made way silently to day
