Movies that your kids can learn from!

By S.M. Intisab Shahriyar

Kids nowadays have access to more content and more information than the last generation did, but, unlike the last generation, the entertainment they have access to on television, the internet and in movies are almost entirely based on crime and violence. The movies that were coming out in the 90's had a lot more filtering than it does now, and more important, some of them had real educational value. The art of passing on a message is now shrouded by tons of special effects, gore and adult-rated material. Finding a movie amongst these that can teach children some much needed lessons in life is hard, but have no fear, as we, at Star Showbiz, have complied a list of movies that kids can learn valuable lessons in life from, while still enjoying a good movie.
The Pursuit of Happyness
The fist on the list and for a good reason too. This movie teaches us about how harsh reality can be at times for those less fortunate and how that can be turned around by immense hard work and undeniable focus. This is an absolute must watch for the whole family.
Forest Gump
Forest Gump has a lot of crucial things that kids will benefit from throughout their lives. Things like making the best with whatever you have been given, never accepting defeat, never giving up on love, absolute loyalty to friends and family and no discrimination are lessons that can make anyone's life as wonderful as can be imagined.
Simon Birch
Simon Birch is physically very small, and believes he was sent by God to do something wonderful. His best friend Joe Wentworth narrates the story as an adult, telling the audience about their childhood. The really charming thing about Simon is his unflinching strength of faith, despite his physical deformity, and watching such a character will be a tremendous confidence booster for most kids.
Requiem of a Dream
In the 'Requiem for a Dream', the drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions become stronger. Everyone should watch this at least once. Not just because they will like it, or because it will teach them something important, but also because that it's a rare piece of work that will challenge and probably change them. You will not so much as want to take a sip of alcohol after watching this mesmerizing film about the horrors of drug addiction.

Race the Sun
This is one movie that many people have not seen and maybe should. It depicts a class of students who have almost given up hope for success but, shows their true colors when challenged to enter and compete in the World Solar Challenge. The movie is based on a true story and it shows that teamwork and persistence can get you rewards that you otherwise wouldn't be able to achieve.
As Good as it Gets
Even if you don't know what good acting means, you'll know it when you see this movie. The movie defines the romantic comedy genre, but there's a lot more to the movie than that. The struggles of people who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder (which is on the rise in recent times) and how the complications of such a disorder can foil plans of those with the best of intentions, is something truly important to learn from.
The Lion King
One of the most popular movies of all time also has many of life's greatest lessons to live by. Things like handling stress, not expecting the world to bend to your will regardless of your status, friendship, the importance of parents, coming to terms with your past and accepting yourself for who you are, are fantastic lessons to live life.
The Bucket List
The Bucket List presents a heartwarming story of friendship, which in itself has much to learn from. But, beyond friendship and companionship, at the heart of the movie is the true meaning of life, or living, which is a question every one of us try to answer at one point in our lives or another. The movie does quite a good job of leading people towards answering that question, and the superb acting performances by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman don't hurt either! Due to some very graphic scenes, this movie is not recommended by children, but is suitable for a 15+ audience.
Cheaper by the Dozen
Our final listing is also about something we have but sometimes take for granted: family. This movie is about that very thing and little else. It shows how a family works, the efforts parents puts in to ensure our wellbeing. It also teaches kids how to be good siblings and support one another through the fun and the hard times.
