NAWSHEEN Girl with the Killer Smile

by Zia Nazmul Islam

Beginning her media career as a Radio Jockey at Radio Today, Nawsheen Nahar Mou has worked as an anchor on various television shows and acted in numerous TV dramas. Nowsheen must be mentioned in bringing the mojo back to radio.  'Jege acho ki', RTV's live talk show brought her charming voice in front of the camera. We came to see Nawsheen in all her glory; her photogenic look, her smartness and above all, her smile. The appeal she brought to the screen was well received and Nawsheen didn't have to look back, her career leaped from voice to full-fledged acting. Star Showbiz had the opportunity to have a conversation with Nawsheen recently.

How did it all begin?
I was a RJ at Radio Today when my colleague Sayem offered me to anchor 'Jege acho ki', RTV's live talk show. It became a huge hit. From one TV anchoring to another, I ended up doing many others. When one does something and gets appreciation from others, a deep rooted interest grows. It turns into a profession from a hobby.
Let's go further back in time, tell us about your studies
Well, I was always a brilliant student – my academics results are outstanding. My family members expected me to be something that no one has been able to in the family. I completed my A-levels in 2005. I enrolled into studying law but due to many reasons I couldn't complete it. Later, I got enrolled in and completed my BBA.
Tell us about your childhood
I am the only daughter of my parents, and I am still pampered by them! I was into cultural activities from my early childhood – and learned singing and dancing. I have received a national award in classical dancing, the Khelaghar Jatiyo Puroskar. My guru in dancing is Likhon Roy. I must thank my family for my cultural orientation, they always encouraged me to be involved in cultural actives. I learned singing too, and continued singing for a while.
How did you end up in radio?
It was sudden! Since I used to sing, many told me that my voice is good. At school & college, I was the regular anchor and MC in any program. At one point, I was through a lot of turmoil in my life, I was very lonely and disturbed. To walk away from these troubles in life, I took the job of Radio Jockey to keep myself busy with something. I told my family that RJ is just a temporary thing, and I'm just going to do it for the time being.

How did you come into acting from anchoring?
Watching me at 'Jege acho ki', many producers and directors collected my number and called me to work with them on their TV dramas. Amitabh Reza saw me at 'Jege acho ki' and listened to my radio programmes, and he was looking for a character who was a RJ. He approached me and I must say that this was a turning point in my acting career.
So what's next?
There was never a plan. Everything in my life was sudden, and all turned out to be for the better. I went through many bad phases in my life. Every time something bad happened, I told myself that something better is waiting for me. This attitude never failed me. The biggest example is right there; when I was mentally feeling down and wanted mental stability, I joined the radio. Now, the Nawsheen you know today is a result of that crucial decision. So, I firmly believe that everything happens for good.
Do you consider yourself a successful person?
The same question was asked five years ago and my answer was, NO! Today, I will say, definitely! My success is embedded by the love in my life, and my family. I am the loving daughter of my parents, I am the loving sister of my only brother. From both sides of the family; paternal and maternal, I am a loved person. I am the loving mother of my son. And of course, the love from my fans! Let me give you an example, some call me 'The Wizard of Words' – they say that they feel better when they listen to me on the radio, what more could I ask for?  Some even told me that my smile disarms them, makes them feel better. To be honest, I really didn't have to struggle a lot to reach where I am today. I feel as if it has all been a gift from God Almighty. Finally, I feel successful because I am happy in my married life. Not only do I have a loving husband, but I have the most loving in-laws. People can earn a lot of money but mental satisfaction in family matters the most to me. And I am successful because I am surrounded by people who love me incredibly.
