Service sector
Recently I met a person from a company, which is based in the subcontinent and also operating in HK. It prompted me to revisit the visions, at least theoretically, Bangladeshi organisations can have in the service sector. There has been much progress in the Financial Services sector under WTO.
Bangladeshi universities / professional institutions are producing a good number of financial professionals, engineers, doctors, nutritionists and so on. Many Bangladeshis are also graduating from countries like Australia, Germany, USA, UK and so on.
Since our pay levels are much more competitive than that of any country in the world, we have a competitive advantage in knowledge based industries like Financial Services industries including banking, engineering industries, health sector, including medical practices, and so on. For example, these days there are a number of banks in the private sector.
Quite a few of them are in joint venture. It might sound Utopian if it is said, 'Why can't these banks come out like HSBC given the competitive advantages in operating this sort of knowledge based organisations by Bangladeshis?'. Perhaps Bangladeshi knowledge based service organisations do not have any of such going-global-strategies in mind.
It could be said about any development or construction firms and even the national carrier-- Bangladesh Biman. Low cost airlines like Easy Jet etc are in high fashion in Europe. Given the competitive advantage in pay levels, a Bangladesh based carrier could be an example in that kind of market.
As Bengali restaurants exist in Europe, there (I mean not only in the UK but also elsewhere) can be Bangladeshi-managed hospitals, banks, schools, colleges, universities and so on.
Anything is possible with the help of knowledge. Forward linkage is no less important than backward linkage!
