Relocate tanneries to Savar
Demands Poribesh Bachao Andolon
Leaders of Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) yesterday demanded that the government immediately relocate the tannery industries at Hazaribagh to Savar to save the Buriganga river from pollution.
They formed a human chain at Jhigatola in the capital to press home the demand.
Though the High Court has directed relocation of the tannery industries, there is no progress in this regard despite the deadline of relocation being extended several times.
This delay is costing the environment as untreated wastes of the tanneries containing chromium, lead and sulfuric acid are polluting the air, water and soil of Hazaribagh area and the adjoining Buriganga river, said the leaders.
Terming the tannery wastes the major polluter of the river, they said around 21,000 cubic metre of untreated wastes is being discharged into the river every day.
The deadline of relocating the tanneries was extended from 2003 till June, 2012, but a central effluent treatment plant (ETP) has not been set up yet, they said.
