Acid Attack on Eden Girl
Ershad also wants parties' role
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad yesterday called upon all political parties to be united to combat acid attacks and other violence against women in the country.
“We don't want to see this kind of violence against women. I want to urge all political parties to be united to fight acid violence against our girls,†he told journalists after visiting acid victim Sharmin Akter Ankhi at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
On January 15, Ankhi, a student of Eden Women's College, was attacked by one Monir Uddin inside a marriage registrar's office in the capital's Chankharpul when she refused a marriage proposal.
Demanding capital punishment of the perpetrators, he said, “During my tenure I enacted a law on acid violence with the provision of capital punishment. Several acid throwers were also given death penalty and incidents of acid violence reduced after that."
The country's women and girls are unprotected now. They often become victim of different violence, he said adding, "We all specially our youths should come forward to stop it."
Ershad blasted different political parties specially the two major parties--BNP and Awami League--saying, "They don't care about people's sufferings or this type of violence against women.â€
Meanwhile, he also visited gang rape victim of a Tangail school girl who is being treated at the One Stop Crisis Centre of DMCH.
