Stray incidents mark hartal
Stray incidents of violence marked the half-day hartal enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance in Gaibandha yesterday.
Activists of the 18-party alliance also brought out a procession in the town during the hartal, which was called to press home their demand to release the detained party leaders.
Witnesses said hartal supporters vandalised more than a dozen vehicles on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway in sadar upazila and other parts of the district.
A chase and counter-chase took place between police and pickets on the highway as pro-hartal men put up barricades at several points.
Police said they lobbed several teargas shells and fired rubber bullets to drive away the pickets from the highway.
Hundreds of vehicles including buses and trucks remained stranded on the highway for hours due to the agitation by pro-hartal supporters.
