A year after Sagar-Runi murder

Must justice remain elusive?
A full year has gone by since the media couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi were murdered in their flat. In all this time, despite public expectations that those behind the gruesome killings would be nabbed and justice would be done, an end to the mystery remains as distant as it was a year ago. Now the Rapid Action Battalion, which earlier took over the investigation of the case from the Detective Branch, informs the country that it has arrested Humayun Kabir alias Enamul, a prime suspect in the case. One wishes one could enthuse over the news. Unfortunately, too much of delay and obfuscation has occurred around the murder, to a point where today it is not just the families of Sagar and Runi but also people across the spectrum who remain sceptical about the authorities being able to actually take the matter to a definitive, credible conclusion. There are reasons behind the scepticism. A former home minister grandly announced, soon after the murders, that the killers would be nabbed within forty eight hours. Nothing happened and subsequently the minister tried to deny her own words. Her successor, in dramatic matter, announced the names of seven suspects in the murder and also announced a bounty for tracking down Enamul. As for Enamul, he was earlier arrested and released and soon was to disappear. Meanwhile, much drama was created around the DNA factor, apparently to not much purpose as yet. We in the media have consistently asked for a thorough, credible investigation into the murder and a quick application of justice in the Sagar-Runi murder case. We fail to understand why such elite agencies as the Detective Branch and Rab, with all the resources at their command, have so far failed to make any remarkable headway in the case. The murder investigation is a test case for the government. And as long as the mystery eludes a solution, it will not only prolong the misery of the families of the victims but also deeply disappoint whole swathes of people, particularly in the media. Rab must now convince people it can and will finish the job without further loss of time. Let not another year go fruitlessly by.
