Zia family
A news item published in almost all the dailies in Dhaka including the DS on 3 April'08 saying that a total of 126 Khaleda-loyalists, former lawmakers of BNP, in a joint statement said the government is trying to tarnish the image of late president Ziaur Rahman's family by going beyond its constitutional jurisdiction.
Demanding the withdrawal of cases filed against Tarique Rahman, his wife and mother-in-law, they also reportedly have said that instead of curbing corruption, the government is using the Anti-Corruption Commission to destroy Zia's family.
Our questions are first, why this government should need to tarnish the image of a particular family. Secondly, does filing cases against a person or persons, whoever that may be, against whom there are prima facie evidence of wrongdoings mean crossing the constitutional jurisdiction? Thirdly, what about the other political leaders who have already been jailed for their involvement in corruption?
This government has waged war against corruption. In the past most of our leaders had violated the constitution and amended many clauses to suit their objectives. The nation will not lend support to false promises of those leaders any more and will not believe them whatever they say in public.
