Padma Bridge
It is indeed good news for all of us, especially for the people of south-western region of the country. Needless to say, there have not been any significant developments in this region for lack of infrastructure facilities. The idea of connecting the south-western region of the country with the capital has been nurtured way back from 2001and the concept of narrowing the gap between the capital and the south-western part of the country had been taken seriously by the two major political parties but somehow it has been delayed and the initial cost which was estimated for the 5.85 kilometre multi-purpose bridge rose from Tk. 5500 crore to Tk. 10500 crore now.
Nevertheless, the donor agencies like World Bank , ADB, JBIC have committed to assist the construction of the proposed longest bridge of the country. According to the latest information that has been revealed through Ministry of Communications that the major design of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is under progress and it would be available to them by June 2009 and the present caretaker government hopes that the main construction of this bridge would start by the end of 2009 and completed in 52 months.
We all are very happy to find these developments, though late than better never. Since this is a mega project we all sincerely hope that whoever comes to rule the country in 2009 they should without wasting any further time call international tender to participate in the construction of this project so that the construction starts by the end of 2009. We sincerely hope that the government would award this project to those firms / contractors who have had enough experience of constructing this type of mega project. We do not want to see another mistake like the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Project.
