Two policemen were injured after being stabbed by suspected muggers during a chase in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area early today.

The injured are Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha, 34, and Constable Mohammad Hridoy Hossain, 20, both posted at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The incident took place around 1:00am in front of the Glass Bridge at Zia Udyan, police said.

According to police and hospital sources, three unidentified muggers attempted to flee on a battery-run rickshaw after committing a mugging. A police patrol team chased them on motorcycles and managed to intercept them. At one stage, one of the suspects stabbed the two policemen with a sharp weapon.

Police detained two of the alleged muggers in connection with the incident. Other officers later rescued the injured policemen and took them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. After receiving primary treatment there, they were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2:30am for advanced care.

Mahmudul Hasan, sub-inspector of the police camp at DMCH, said the two policemen are currently undergoing treatment at Ward No. 4 of the hospital’s emergency department.
