Still hoping for dialogue
Don't stand on ego
IT seems that the issue of dialogue has gotten stuck on a very trivial matter as to who should call whom now.
We feel that, as Begum Zia had expressed her inability to sit for talks on 28th October as proposed by the PM, on the excuse of the hartal, it is now her turn to respond, all the more so when she had been repeatedly saying during the telephone talks that she was ready to sit for dialogue any time after the hartal.
In a similar vein, we feel that since the invitation for dialogue came from the PM, it is in the fitness of things that she again took the lead and renewed her offer for talks to the opposition leader. And given the AL general secretary's statement that the dialogue offer still stands, he should now take another step forward and act to facilitate the process to move on.
It cannot be overemphasised that there is still a great deal of anxiety in the minds of the people regarding how the situation develops. They are hoping for an amicable settlement of the contentious issue of poll-time administration peacefully through dialogue.
It is regrettable that neither of the two leaders can see the volatility of the matter. The situation demands that they act quickly and positively to allay public anxiety without sticking to the finer points of protocol. Not doing so would be a total disregard of the people's interest and an insult to their feelings.
