A dispute over inviting rival group members to a wedding ceremony turned deadly in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar upazila, leaving a former union parishad member dead and at least 17 others injured.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon at Mosjid Bazar in Dharmondal village, confirmed Shahinur Islam, officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar Police Station.

The deceased, Jitu Mia, 55, was a former member of Dharmondal Union Parishad.

Police and locals said he had a long-standing rivalry with another local leader, Ramzan Member, over area dominance.

Members of the rival group objected when Jitu attended a wedding event. After they raised questions regarding his invitation, an argument ensued, which soon escalated into a violent clash, lasting about an hour, with both groups using locally made weapons.

Jitu sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, where he died during treatment.

At least 17 others were injured, several critically, police said.

Following his death, additional police forces were deployed in the area to maintain order.

Brahmanbaria Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Crime) Md Obaidur Rahman said, “The clash occurred over a wedding invitation involving two rival groups. The situation is now under control, and legal action is being taken after identifying those involved.”
