Gulshan highrise aberration

Hold those responsible to account
VIOLATING a High Court stay order and building rules, internal construction and renting out of the basement of an under-construction highrise structure are reportedly underway in the Gulshan area of the city. Strangely, construction approval for the building situated on Rajuk-owned land has been given by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to a property developer. Worse yet, the builder did not even bother to take environmental and height-related clearances from appropriate authorities. Simply put, it's an example of total disregard for all laws and norms by a local government body apparently in cahoots with a realtor. The question is why did Rajuk not challenge DNCC's approving the construction work and allow the building activities which is learnt to have been going on for some seven years? And why did DNCC arrogate to itself the approval authority, which actually belongs to Rajuk? Though officials of either authority have admitted that there was a lapse, yet neither could come up with a plausible answer as to why. Adding to bewilderment, the public works ministry despite having the authority to intervene and stop construction has done precious little thus far. There are too many whys clamouring for a satisfactory answer surrounding the high-rise building. The government from its highest level must look into this defiance of law and hold those responsible to account.
