Opposition MPs' shocking outburst
Dignity of the House defiled
IT was highly distressing to witness the behaviour of some MPs from the Opposition bench on Sunday. We feel that all bounds of decency were broken by the vituperative words hurled; the tone and substance of their comments surpassing the vile. Apparently, it did not take much time for some of the MPs to show their true element when it came to using unparliamentary language.
Parliament is the place to debate issues, but that needs to be kept within the limits of civility and decent behaviour. However, listening to the utterances of some of the opposition MPs, one got the impression that they were not conversant with it.
We are reminded of what the present opposition leader had said in one instance, that it was impossible to practice parliamentary politics without having patience, decency, politeness and courtesy. Obviously, some of her parliamentary colleagues do not subscribe to her views.
The MPs are referred to as 'Honourable,' an appellation they must live up to. They should not forget either that the parliament proceedings are carried live on the electronic media. We need hardly remind the MPs that not only are such behaviour denigrating the House, it is also casting them in very poor light in the eyes of the people.
Regrettably, misdemeanor in the parliament is not the exclusive preserve of any one party. We demand better behaviour from the MPs. We would hope that the party leaders would impress on their colleagues the need to set better examples to uphold the dignity of the House.
