Cautious Windies end day at 223 for five

Star Online Report

Both Bangladesh and West Indies had their periods of good cricket out there in the middle on the first day of their second and final of the two-Tests at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today. West Indies finish the day at 223 for five -- the lowest runs scored in a full day's play in Mirpur -- with an unbeaten partnership of 45 runs between Nkrumah Bonner and Joshua Da Silva.

Both Bonner and Da Silva played cautiously at the latter stage to see the day through without any more hiccups after a flurry of wickets in the middle had seen the visitors in a spot of bother.

West Indies started the day brightly with openers -- skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell -- stitching together a 66-run stand. Bangladesh bowlers seemed to have been a bit wayward with their line and length in the beginning, making it easier for the Windies openers to score runs. And it seemed as if the visitors would go on to Lunch unscathed but Taijul Islam gave the crucial breakthrough when he had Campbell trapped in front in the 21st over. But the first session still belonged to the Windies as they amassed 84 for the loss of that one wicket.

Bangladesh bowlers, Abu Jayed in particular, made a stunning comeback after Lunch. The right-armer, who is playing as the sole front-line pacer in the squad, bowled at a very good length and was also rewarded for his efforts. He picked up the wickets of Shayne Moseley (7 off 38) and Kyle Mayers (5 off 18) in that session. Soumya Sarkar, who came in as a replacement of Shakib Al Hasan and is being used as the second seamer in the game, also maintained a good channel and even beat the outside edge of the batsmen on few occasions. The part-timer also induced a thick edge off Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite's bat to get rid of him after a 122-ball 47. And Bangladesh went for Tea being on the driver's seat after scalping three wickets in the second session.

However, Bonner, who came to bat after the wicket of Moseley, batted brilliantly till the end as he remained unbeaten on 74 off 173 deliveries, featuring six boundaries. And although West Indies lost Jermaine Blackwood (28 off 77) after Tea, Da Silva then played cautiously to build a promising partnership with Bonner as the duo saw the day through.

For Bangladesh, Jayed has been the star performer of the day, bowling brilliantly to finish with figures of two for 46 in his 18 overs that featured five maidens.

80.1 Ov; WI 195/5: Nkrumah Bonner defends an Abu Jayed delivery and no runs are taken. Bangladesh take the new ball with Jayed in the attack.

71.6 Ov; WI 178/5: Jermaine Blackwood plays a forward drive off a Taijul Islam delivery but goes through with it a bit early as he ends up lobbing it to the bowler who holds on to the catch. Taijul breaks the dangerous-looking partnership between Nkrumah Bonner and Blackwood of 62 runs.  Jermaine Blackwood c & b Taijul Islam 28 (77b 5x4 0x6) SR: 36.36

Bonner, Blackwood star in fifty stand as Windies rebuild

67.3 Ov; WI 174/4: Nkrumah Bonner plays a Taijul Islam delivery towards long-off and takes a single to bring up his fifty off 98 deliveries.

64.5 Ov; WI 166/4: A length delivery from Mehedi Hasan Miraz coming in towards right-handed batsman Jermaine Blackwood and he goes on his back foot and flicks it towards deep midwicket to take a single. And that brings up the fifty stand between Blackwood and Nkrumah Bonner. No more hiccups since Tea as this pair is looking solid and have been rebuilding the innings well after West Indies lost a number of quick wickets following Lunch.

Flurry of wickets see Windies lose momentum

2:30pm: Players are back on the field after Tea and Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who is yet to get a wicket in this game, will resume the proceedings.

Bangladesh made a very good come back after Lunch. The bowlers kept it tight and managed to take regular wickets, not letting the Windies batsmen settle in the middle. Abu Jayed, who seemed a bit wayward and indisciplined with his line and length in the morning session, has been phenomenal after Lunch. The right-armer, who is playing as the sole front-line pacer in the squad, bowled at a very good length and has also been rewarded for it. He picked up the wickets of Shayne Moseley (7 off 38) and Kyle Mayers (5 off 18) in this session. Soumya Sarkar, who came in as a replacement of Shakib Al Hasan and is being used as the second seamer in the game, has maintained a good channel and even beat the outside edge of the batsmen on few occasions. Soumya also induced a thick edge off Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite's bat to get rid of him after a 122-ball 47. Nkrumah Bonner, however, looked solid since he came out to bat. The right-hander remains unbeaten on 30 off 68 deliveries with Jermaine Blackwood on 18 off 35 at the other end. But with the spinners also getting sharp turns and bounce, the Tigers would look to keep on building pressure and pick up a few more wickets, especially the one of Bonner, after play resumes post Tea.

57.6 Ov; WI 146/4: A fullish delivery from Soumya Sarkar and Jermaine Blackwood knocks it past mid-on for a boundary. And that will be Tea.

Windies in a spot of bother as Jayed removes Mayers

47.5 Ov WI: 116/4: The ball from Abu Jayed seems to be shaping away from the left-hander Kyle Mayers. But the batsman, who smashed a double ton in Chattogram Test, plays the outside off delivery and gets an edge. Soumya Sarkar at slip comes into action and he takes a sharp catch. And, suddenly, with three wickets in this session, West Indies now look to be in a spot of bother despite a very good start to the game.  Kyle Mayers c Soumya Sarkar b Abu Jayed 5 (18b 1x4 0x6) SR: 27.78

Soumya removes Windies skipper Brathwaite

41.1 Ov; WI 104/3: A length delivery outside off from Soumya Sarkar and West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite tries to cut it. However, he gets a thick edge and Najmul Hossain Shanto at first slip takes a good catch. Soumya, who is in as Shakib Al Hasan's replacement, takes the prized wicket of Brathwaite. Kraigg Brathwaite c Najmul Hossain Shanto b Soumya Sarkar 47 (122b 4x4 0x6) SR: 38.52

38.5 Ov; WI 102/2: Nkrumah Bonner goes on his backfoot and cuts a Taijul Islam delivery past the point fielder for a boundary. Brings up the team's 100 in style.

Jayed strikes after Lunch

33.2Ov; WI 87/2: An outside off delivery from Abu Jayed which could have well been left by the left-hander Shayne Moseley. But he decides to have a go with not much of a foot movement and pays the price. He ends up getting an inside edge and drags it onto his stumps. Jayed gets his first scalp in this Test. A good start for Bangladesh post Lunch. Shayne Moseley b Abu Jayed 7 (38b 1x4 0x6) SR: 18.42

12:10pm: We are back after Lunch and Abu Jayed will resume proceedings.

Windies get off to a promising start

A very good session for West Indies comes to an end. Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat and the visitors hardly put a step wrong since. Both openers Brathwaite and John Campbell looked very comfortable out in the middle as they provided the Windies a very positive start. The only success for Bangladesh in the session came through Taijul Islam in the 21st over as he had Campbell trapped in front after a 68-ball 36. Bangladesh bowlers looked to be lacking discipline, especially Abu Jayed, who returned to the XI in place of Mustafizur Rahman, has been a bit wayward in his first spell. The Tigers, however, looked to be getting their rhythm back at the latter stage of the session. But with just a wicket and 84 runs on the board, this session would definitely belong to West Indies.

28.6 Ov; WI 84/1: Shayne Moseley goes back and defends a Taijul Islam delivery. And that will be Lunch on Day 1 of second Test.

Taijul gives Tigers breakthrough

20.4 Ov; WI 66/1: An outside off delivery from Taijul Islam to left-hander John Campbell and the batsman goes for a sweep. The ball goes on to hit the pads followed by a loud appeal from Bangladesh players. Umpire raises his finger but the Windies batsmen go for a review. And the review shows that the ball would go on to hit the stumps but it also showed a slight tickle in the Ultra Edge which could be due to the noise of the sweep. The original decision stays and Taijul gives Bangladesh the much-needed breakthrough, ending a promising partnership between openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Campbell. John Campbell lbw b Taijul Islam 36 (68b 5x4 1x6) SR: 52.94

14.1 Ov; WI 53/0: A fuller ball outside the off-stump from Taijul Islam and Kraigg Brathwaite goes down the track and hits it hard over Taijul's head for a boundary. That brings up the fifty-run stand between the opening pair of Brathwaite and John Campbell and this seems to be a very positive start by the Windies.

Positive start for Windies as openers star in fifty stand

8.6 Ov; WI 29/0: An angling in delivery from Abu Jayed from around the wickets to the left-handed opener John Campbell. The ball goes on to hit the left-hander's pads and a huge appeal from Bangladesh players. The umpire eventually obliges and West Indies opt to go for a review. The review showed that there was no bat involved but the ball would have gone over the stumps. Decision overturned and West Indies remain unscathed. The Windies openers -- Campbell and skipper Kraigg Brathwaite -- seemed fairly comfortable out in the middle before this appeal for leg-before from the Bangladesh players. Jayed, who comes back in the XI in place of Mustafizur Rahman for this Test, has struggled a bit to maintain his length at times, bowling a few down the leg side.

No Mustafizur as Windies elect to bat in Mirpur Test

West Indies have won the toss and will be batting first in the second and final Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.

Bangladesh bring in three changes in their playing XI from the first Test in Chattogram. Premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and left-handed opener Shadman Islam miss out due to injuries while ace left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman has been dropped. Mustafizur had to bowl from a wider angle after he was warned twice for treading on the danger zone in the Chattogram Test and the left-armer subsequently had become less effective in that game. And maybe that played a part in not including Mustafizur in the starting XI today.

Shakib, who suffered a thigh injury in the Chattogram Test, was ruled out of this Test while Shadman Islam, a first-choice opener in Tests, also failed to fully recover from a hip injury incurred as a result of an awkward fall while fielding on day four of the first Test.

Soumya Sarkar, who was announced as Shakib's replacement in the squad, gets a nod. Batsman Mohammad Mithun returns and Bangladesh again go with a sole pacer, this time with their regular first-choice Test pacer Abu Jayed, in the XI.

West Indies also made one change in the squad with pacer Kemar Roach making way for another right-arm pacer Alzarri Joseph.
