Shoriful, Starc share spotlight: Key records, milestones on Day 1 in Mackay

Bangladesh lead the two-Test series 1-0 after a historic nine-wicket victory in Darwin, but Australia struck back on the opening day of the second Test in Mackay, taking a 101-run lead after 18 wickets tumbled on Saturday. Mitchell Starc and fit-again Shoriful Islam shared the spotlight, both producing six-wicket hauls in a fast-bowling masterclass. Here are the highlights of an eventful day:

** A total of 18 wickets fell on the opening day in Mackay, the third-highest number of day-one wickets in a Test in Australia since 1975. Twenty wickets fell in Melbourne on the opening day of the last Ashes, while 19 fell in Perth.

** Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Starc dismissed Shadman Islam with the very first ball of the Mackay Test on Saturday, the fourth time he has taken a wicket with the opening delivery of a Test. West Indies’ Pedro Collins is second on the list with three such instances, all against Bangladesh opener Hannan Sarkar.

** Starc also became the first bowler to take a wicket in the first over of a Test nine times. England’s James Anderson is second with eight such instances.

** With figures of 6-12, Starc took his Test wicket tally to 441, moving into the top 10 all-time Test wicket-takers and surpassing South Africa's Dale Steyn, who finished with 439 wickets.

** Starc completed his five-wicket haul in just 22 balls, his second-fastest in Test cricket and the sixth-fastest overall. He holds the record for the fastest Test five-for, having taken five wickets in just 15 balls against the West Indies in 2025.

** Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 in their first innings, their fourth-lowest total in Test cricket and their lowest against Australia.

** Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam became the first player to score his team's highest number of runs while batting at No. 11 and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test.

** Shoriful, who scored 14 at No. 11, became the first No. 11 batter to top-score against Australia in Tests. Overall, it was the second such instance for Bangladesh. In 2004, Talha Jubair top-scored with 31 while batting at No. 11 against India in Chattogram, as Bangladesh made 124.

** Shoriful became only the fifth Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul against Australia in Tests. Shakib Al Hasan achieved the feat twice in the Mirpur Test in 2017.

** Shoriful took his five wickets in 8.5 overs, making it the second-fastest five-wicket haul by a Bangladesh bowler. Taijul Islam holds the record, taking five wickets in 6.5 overs against West Indies in 2018.

** Shoriful's 6-35 is his best Test bowling performance in an innings and his first five-wicket haul in the format. His previous best was 3-28 against Afghanistan in the second innings in Mirpur in 2023.
